From April 17 through June 5, PDX Jazz brings an intimate lineup of performances to the heart of downtown every Friday from 5–7 PM. Artist: Tim Jensen Quartet
Woodwind player Tim Jensen was born in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1984.
In 1985, Tim released an album of original material with his band Hat and Beard and subsequently performed at the 1986 and 1987 Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival.
At the age of 26, Tim became a saxophonist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the first woodwind player with the Fisher Theatre Orchestra, playing Broadway show productions.
In 1988, Tim was hired by New York contractor Mel Rodnon to travel with the national touring production of Cats. Tim would continue to tour and work for Rodnon until the contractor’s death in 2003. Other national tours include Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Aspects of Love, Memphis, and In the Heights with Lin-Manuel Miranda. In 1992, Tim moved to New York City, where he freelanced until 1997, when he moved to Portland, Oregon.
Since moving to Portland, Tim has been a saxophonist with the Oregon Symphony since 1998. Performance highlights include premiering conductor Gregory Vajda’s work for alto saxophone “Duvoe” in 2011, and performing with Chick Corea in 2019.
Tim has been the principal woodwind player for Broadway national touring productions at the Keller Auditorium in Portland since 1998.
Tim has also performed with the Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theater. Works include Werther (1999), Nixon in China (2006), Showboat (2015), and Wooden Dimes (2024).
Tim released his album of original material, Mind For the Scenery, on the Origin label in 2004. He has also recorded with Gino Vannelli, Pink Martini, Nu Shooz, Rebecca Kilgore, Third Angle, Tom Grant, the Portland Jazz Orchestra, D.K. Stewart, Gary Hobbs, Gordon Lee, and others.
Tim has also backed up many national acts, including Julie Andrews, Tim Curry, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Mathis, The O’Jays, The Temptations, the Four Tops, The Contours, Mary Wilson, Natalie Cole, Diana Reeves, Ray Charles, Lou Rawls, Gladys Knight, Stuart Copeland, Patti Austin, Ravi Coltrane, and many others.
